Spaceballs
Directed by Mel Brooks
1987
★ 3.0 editorial score
George Lucas allowed it on condition that no merchandise be sold, so Mel Brooks put a merchandising joke in the film: Star Wars parodied by someone who clearly loves it.
“Every now and then, ''Spaceballs'' produces the kind of out-of-film experience that has given Mr. Brooks's best work its distinctively surreal dimension...Mr. Brooks manages to call attention to the film-making process itself at every opportunity. More particularly, he emphasizes the ephemeral nature of the marketing process, which for a film like ''Spaceballs'' may be the very heart of the matter anyhow.”
