De Niro spent thirty years teaching audiences to fear him and then rented that out to a comedy: a man meets his girlfriend's father, and every single thing he does makes it worse.
“What makes it so good are the complementary performances of Stiller as the decent, anxious, increasingly frazzled suitor and De Niro, who gives his best comic performance to date as Greg's cropped-haired, malevolently twinkling, permanently suspicious nemesis.”
