Tombstone

Directed by George P. Cosmatos
1993
★ 4.6 editorial score

Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is the reason people keep rewatching it: the film lost its director a month into shooting and still produced the most quotable western since the sixties.

“Tombstone" is really two movies loosely sewn together. One is a conventional western in which Wyatt and his brothers Morgan and Virgil set out to save Tombstone from the clutches of an outlaw gang. The other is a self-consciously digressive meditation on the iconography of the Hollywood western. As in Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven"...the traditional archetypes triumph over modernist conventions.”
