Disney kept live fawns at the studio so the animators could watch them move: the backgrounds are painted like Chinese landscape scrolls, and the film trusts weather and silence where other cartoons talk.
“In colors that would surprise even the spectrum itself, Disney's cartoon craftsmen have re-created a woodland that shimmers and glows and darkens altogether magically...In this enchanted sanctuary they have assembled a cast that grows up, comically discovers love, tells jokes and plays pranks as only Disney's animals can.”
