The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory

1954 · Oil on Canvas
Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida
★ 5.2 editorial score

Dali revisits his own most famous image - the melting watches of the Persistence of Memory, also in this collection - but now the landscape has broken apart into floating blocks and rods, the ground dissolving into a grid of separating bricks and the elements suspended over water. Salvador Dali recast the dream scene for the atomic age, when matter was understood as mostly empty space. Now in the Dali Museum in Florida, the Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory turns his soft clocks into a meditation on physics - the world coming apart into its weightless, particulate components.
