The limestone bulk of Mont Sainte-Victoire rises beyond the patchwork Provencal valley, the mountain and the fields alike built from firm, faceted patches of green, ochre, and blue laid side by side. Cezanne painted his beloved local peak again and again, less to record its appearance than to reconstruct it as solid form and structure. Now in the Barnes Foundation, this version shows the method that made him the father of modern painting - nature analyzed into planes of color, the mountain becoming a meditation on how seeing and building a picture truly work.
