Hamburger Hill

Directed by John Irvin
1987
★ 2.0 editorial score

The least mythologizing Vietnam film anyone made: ten days in May 1969 taking one hill that the army abandoned immediately afterward, filmed as almost pure exhaustion and mud.

“On May 10, 1969, the troops of the 101st Airborne Division began their assault on a hill numbered 937. Ten days later, after huge casualties, the hill was taken. The enemy bunkers were destroyed and the hill was ultimately abandoned. Whether or not the taking of the hill was worth the high price paid for it, the film doesn't say, though, by not taking a position, ''Hamburger Hill'' may be read in such a way as to seem hawkish.”
