The Outsiders
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
1983
★ 3.9 editorial score
Coppola cast almost every young male star of the coming decade before any of them were famous: Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe, filmed in Tulsa like a fever dream.
“Along with the rumbles and dust-ups, there is a fatal fire and a daring if improbable rescue. The story shudders with melodramatic excess, as do most memorable tales about teenagers, from "Romeo and Juliet" to "Rebel Without a Cause," Mr. Coppola's most obvious touchstone.”
