Winter's Bone

★ 6.0 editorial score
Jennifer Lawrence was eighteen and unknown when Debra Granik cast her: a girl in the Ozarks has a week to find her father or lose the house, and nobody local will help.
“This is not a story about drugs and family life in a particular region of the United States, even though it displays some impressive local knowledge. It is more deeply about tribal ties and individual choices, about a stubborn girl’s sense of justice coming into sharp and dangerous conflict with deep and intractable customs.”
