Wheat Field with Cypresses
A golden wheat field ripples beneath rolling, billowing white clouds, dark green cypresses flaming upward at the right, the entire landscape alive with swirling, rhythmic brushstrokes that make earth, trees, and sky pulse with energy. Van Gogh painted it near the asylum at Saint-Remy, in love with the cypress, which he compared to an Egyptian obelisk. Now in the Metropolitan Museum, Wheat Field with Cypresses is among his greatest landscapes - the Provencal countryside transfigured by his surging line into a vision of nature charged with restless, irrepressible life.
