Starry Night

1889 · Oil on Canvas
Museum of Modern Art, New York City
★ 9.6 editorial score

Over a quiet village with a slender church spire, the night sky heaves and swirls with great rolling currents, eleven blazing stars, and a glowing crescent moon, while a dark, flame-like cypress surges up in the foreground. Van Gogh painted the Starry Night from his window in the asylum at Saint-Remy, partly from memory and feeling, charging the heavens with restless, rhythmic energy. Now in the Museum of Modern Art, it is his most famous work and one of the best-known images in all of art - the night sky transformed into pure, churning emotion.
