Almond Blossoms
Branches of white almond blossom spread across a clear turquoise-blue sky, the flowering boughs rendered with the bold cropping and flat elegance of the Japanese prints Van Gogh loved. He painted it as a gift to celebrate the birth of his brother Theo's son, named Vincent after him - a symbol of new life and hope. Now in the Van Gogh Museum, Almond Blossoms is among his most tender and joyful works, free of turmoil, the early spring blossom held up against the sky as a fresh, hopeful emblem of beginnings.
