Ecce Homo (Titian)

1548 · Oil on Panel
El Prado, Madrid
★ 6.1 editorial score

Behold the man - Pilate's words as he showed the scourged Christ to the crowd (John 19:5). Titian paints him close and alone, half-length, a reed in his bound hands and the crown of thorns pressed down, his eyes turned upward in exhaustion rather than reproach. Stripped of the jeering mob that fills larger versions of the scene, the panel becomes an object for private prayer, the kind of intimate devotional image Titian supplied to the devout Habsburg court. Loose, warm brushwork models the flesh and the falling light; the mood is quiet suffering, meant to be met one to one.
