Seated cross-legged with a papyrus scroll across his lap, this official holds still, as if waiting for dictation to resume. His eyes, inlaid with rock crystal and copper, give the face a startling, living alertness rare in the otherwise rigid conventions of Egyptian art. Found at Saqqara, the burial ground of the ancient capital Memphis, he dates to the Old Kingdom, when scribes were among the powerful few who could read and write. Unlike the idealized, eternal bodies carved for pharaohs, his soft chest and rounded belly record a particular man of sedentary office.
