The Sacrament of the Last Supper
Christ sits with his apostles at a long table within a great luminous dodecahedron - a twelve-sided geometric chamber - a translucent torso with outstretched arms hovering above, a calm Catalan seascape beyond the windows. Salvador Dali fused Renaissance symmetry, sacred geometry, and his 'nuclear mysticism' to render the Last Supper as a serene, mathematical vision. Now in Washington's National Gallery, the Sacrament of the Last Supper is among his most ambitious late religious works - traditional Christian subject and modern science joined in a calm, radiant, carefully ordered image of faith and cosmic harmony.
