Swans Reflecting Elephants

1937 · Oil on Canvas
Private collection
★ 6.1 editorial score

Three swans float on a still lake before a cluster of bare autumn trees - and in the rippling reflection the swans become elephants, their necks the trunks, the trees their legs. Salvador Dali built Swans Reflecting Elephants on his beloved double image, in which a single form reads as two things at once depending on how the eye is led. Now in a private collection, it is among the most elegant demonstrations of his trick - a calm Catalan landscape that quietly transforms before your eyes, reality and reflection sliding into uncanny, dreamlike doubleness.
