The Polish Rider

1655 · Oil on Canvas
The Frick Collection, New York City
★ 7.5 editorial score

A young horseman rides through a darkening landscape, bow and arrows and saber at the ready, his face alert beneath a tall fur cap, his pale horse picking its way past shadowy hills and a dim fortress. Rembrandt leaves the rider's identity and errand a mystery, and generations have puzzled over him - soldier, pilgrim, symbol. Now in the Frick, the Polish Rider casts a strange romantic spell, a solitary figure moving through gathering dusk toward some unknown end, the whole picture charged with mood rather than story.
