Sacrifice of Isaac

1634 · Oil on Canvas
Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
★ 6.7 editorial score

The angel seizes Abraham's wrist at the last instant, and the knife tumbles loose in mid-air as the old man, his huge hand still clamped over Isaac's upturned face, twists toward the messenger in shock. Rembrandt catches the test of faith at its most violent hinge (Genesis 22) - the bound son helpless, the father's whole body lurching between obedience and reprieve. Now in the Hermitage, it shows his gift for finding the precise psychological instant in a sacred story, the falling blade freezing the difference between sacrifice and mercy.
