Philosopher in Meditation

1632 · Oil on Oak
Louvre, Paris
★ 6.9 editorial score

An old man sits in thought by a tall window in a great vaulted room, a magnificent spiral staircase winding up into shadow behind him, while across the space a woman tends a glowing fire. Rembrandt - or a close follower, for the attribution is debated - makes the whole picture a study in two sources of light, daylight and flame, pooling in a vast dimness. Now in the Louvre and long called the Philosopher in Meditation, it is less an illustration than an evocation: solitude, age, and the turning of thought in a hushed interior.
