The Virgin Appearing to St. Bernard
1494 · Oil on Wood
Alte Pinakothek, Munich
★ 5.2 editorial score
St Bernard of Clairvaux looks up from his writing as the Virgin appears to him with attendant saints, the moment of grace held in perfect calm (the vision belongs to the Cistercian monk's legend). Perugino arranges everyone in serene, weightless symmetry before an airy arcade that opens on a soft Umbrian valley - the balanced, sweet-faced clarity that was his signature. That clarity matters beyond this panel: Perugino was the teacher of Raphael, and the older master's poise and spacious calm pass almost directly into his pupil's art. Here the manner that would define the High Renaissance is already fully formed.
