The Port of Saint-Tropez

1902 · Oil on Canvas

★ 5.6 editorial score

The Mediterranean harbor of Saint-Tropez glitters under a brilliant southern sky, sailboats and their reflections broken into a dazzling mosaic of small, bright, separate touches of pure color. Paul Signac, who settled in the fishing town and drew the Neo-Impressionists south, renders light and water as a shimmering patchwork. Now in Tokyo, the Port of Saint-Tropez shows his mature, freer divisionism - the rigid dots of Seurat loosened into larger, vibrant tesserae of color that make the whole canvas pulse with Mediterranean sun, an exuberant celebration of light on the water.
