A solitary young man in bathing trunks stands in a pale, sketchy landscape, hands on his hips, his weight settled, his gaze turned inward and downward. Cezanne strips the bather of all eroticism and narrative, building the body from solid planes and giving the lone figure a brooding, monumental presence. Now in the Museum of Modern Art, the Bather is among his most powerful single figures - awkward, weighty, and self-contained, the human form treated with the same structural seriousness he brought to mountains and apples, a meditation on volume, balance, and quiet isolation.
