The Problem We All Live With

1964 · Oil on Canvas
Private collection
★ 7.2 editorial score

A small Black girl in a white dress walks to school flanked by four faceless U.S. marshals, a wall behind her scrawled with a racial slur and splattered by a thrown tomato. Norman Rockwell based the Problem We All Live With on Ruby Bridges, who integrated a New Orleans school in 1960, and made it a stark departure from his cozier work. Now widely reproduced, it is among the most powerful images of the American civil rights movement - a child's quiet courage set against the ugliness of racism, dignity walking through hatred.
