La Mariee (The Bride)

1950 · Gouache on Canvas
Private collection
★ 6.1 editorial score

A bride in a flowing red gown floats through a deep blue night beside a goat playing a cello and a winged creature, lovers and a village drifting in the dream. Marc Chagall returns to the imagery of weddings, music, and his Russian-Jewish memories that filled his art for a lifetime. Now in a private collection - and familiar to many from its cameo in a popular film - La Mariee is a luminous example of his late style, gravity suspended, color glowing, love and memory and folklore woven into a tender, weightless nocturne.
