I and the Village

1911 · Oil on Canvas
Museum of Modern Art, New York City
★ 7.2 editorial score

A green-faced peasant and a cow gaze at each other in profile across the canvas, and around and between them float fragments of village memory - a small church, upside-down houses, a fiddler, a milkmaid - all arranged in glowing, dreamlike geometric segments. Marc Chagall conjured I and the Village from his childhood in Jewish Vitebsk, fusing Cubist structure with Russian folk fantasy. Now in the Museum of Modern Art, it is among his most beloved works - a radiant, poetic dream of memory and rural life, logic suspended in favor of pure imaginative wonder.
