Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

1416 · Tempera and gold on Vellum
Musee Conde, Chantilly
★ 8.5 editorial score

Not one of the famous calendar labours but the book's strangest page, 'Anatomical Man': a naked figure, in fact a doubled male-and-female pair, ringed by the twelve signs of the zodiac, each governing the part of the body it touches in a chart linking the heavens to human health. The three Limbourg brothers painted it in jewel-bright color and gold for Jean, Duc de Berry, and left the manuscript unfinished when all three died, probably of plague, in 1416. The supreme achievement of International Gothic manuscript painting.
