The Tilled Field

1924 · Oil on Canvas
Guggenheim, New York City
★ 6.8 editorial score

A Catalan farm has dissolved into a Surrealist dreamscape, its fields and creatures transformed into fantastical hybrids - an enormous eye and ear sprouting from a tree, flags, a lizard in a cap, biomorphic beasts - scattered across zones of bare earth and sky. Joan Miro painted the Tilled Field as his first fully Surrealist work, the real landscape of his childhood remade by free association and dream. Now in the Guggenheim, it marks his decisive leap - the meticulous world of his Farm bursting into a playful, sign-filled language of invented forms.
