Officer and a Laughing Girl

1660 · Oil on Canvas
The Frick Collection, New York City
★ 7.1 editorial score

A laughing young woman in a sunlit room turns toward a soldier whose large dark hat and shadowed back loom huge in the foreground, a bright map of Holland on the wall behind them. Vermeer plays daring games of scale and light - the near figure massive and dim, the far one small and radiant - and lets warm daylight pour across the scene. Now in the Frick, the Officer and Laughing Girl distills a whole flirtation into a glance and a smile, intimacy staged with the painter's cool, exact, luminous calm.
