Christ Carrying the Cross (Bosch)

1516 · Oil on Panel
Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Ghent), Ghent
★ 6.8 editorial score

A dense mob of leering, snarling faces presses in from every side, grotesque masks of cruelty and stupidity, while Christ at the center carries his cross with eyes closed in unreachable calm. At the lower left, Saint Veronica turns away with the same inward serenity, her veil bearing his imprinted face; the brutal heads of the thieves jostle in the crush. Bosch - if the panel is his, for the attribution is now debated - reduces the Passion to a single contrast: a quiet soul adrift in a sea of human ugliness. It tells the same story as Grunewald's tormented Christ elsewhere in this collection, in a colder key.
