Danae

1907 · Oil on Canvas
Private collection
★ 6.3 editorial score

The mythological princess Danae lies curled in sleep, her ample body filling the canvas, as Zeus descends to her as a cascade of golden coins and ornament pouring between her thighs. Klimt fuses sensual abandon with his signature decorative gold and pattern, the swooning figure an image of ecstatic conception. Now in Vienna, his Danae is among the most erotic of his mythologies - the ancient subject of divine seduction, treated by Titian and others, recast in shimmering Art Nouveau splendor, all curving flesh and glittering gold in a frankly rapturous vision of desire.
