Marriage at Cana

1305 · Fresco
Scrovegni Chapel, Padua
★ 4.6 editorial score

At a wedding in the village of Cana, Christ performed his first miracle, quietly turning jars of water into wine when the feast ran dry (John 2:1-11). Giotto fills the scene with homely detail - the curtained room, the laden table, a steward tasting from a bowl, a portly servant tending the great stone jars - so the supernatural arrives almost unnoticed by the guests. Part of his Arena Chapel cycle in Padua, it shows Giotto's gift for making sacred events look like things that happened to recognizable people in a real room.
