Ram's Head White Hollyhock and Little Hills
A bleached ram's skull with great curling horns floats above the low desert hills of New Mexico, a single white hollyhock blossom beside it under a wide pale sky. Georgia O'Keeffe gathered such sun-whitened bones on the desert and made them her great subject, finding in them not death but a strange, enduring beauty. Now in the Brooklyn Museum, Ram's Head, White Hollyhock and Little Hills fuses the skull, the flower, and the land into a single serene meditation - life and death, the delicate and the bony, held together in the clear light of the Southwest she loved.
