A woman holds a tightly swaddled newborn while a second figure shields a candle with her hand, its light falling on the smooth round face of the sleeping infant. Georges de la Tour strips away every overt religious marker - no halo, no manger - yet the hush and reverence make it feel like a nativity, the ordinary birth raised to the sacred by light alone. Now in Rennes, it is among the most serene and monumental of his candlelit scenes, a moment of pure stillness built from a few simple, glowing forms.
