The Dream of Saint Joseph

★ 5.9 editorial score

By the light of a single candle a young angel leans toward the sleeping Joseph, one hand raised, delivering in a dream the message that will shape the holy family's fate. Georges de la Tour stages the visitation with utter quiet - the old man dozing over a book, the child-angel's fingers glowing translucent before the flame, the rest swallowed in dark. Now in Nantes, it turns a supernatural event into something tender and domestic, the divine arriving softly in the night. The candlelit hush is the essence of his mature art.
