Christ with St. Joseph in the Carpenter's Shop

1642 · Oil on Canvas
Louvre, Paris
★ 6.5 editorial score

The boy Christ holds a candle for his foster father, and its flame glows red through his small cupped fingers as Joseph bends to bore a hole in a plank, the wood and tools sharp in the warm light. Georges de la Tour makes the humble carpenter's shop a place of quiet wonder, the child literally giving light to the man. Now in the Louvre, it is one of his most beloved nocturnes - sacred meaning carried entirely by candlelight, tenderness, and the silent attention between an old man and a luminous child.
