★ 5.2 editorial score

Foxes curl together, their forms built from angular, prismatic facets in silvery greys, blues, and reddish browns, so that the animals seem assembled from shards of light. Franz Marc fuses the Blue Rider's spiritual feeling for animals with the faceting of Cubism and Futurism, seeking the inner essence of the creature rather than its surface. Now in Wuppertal, the Fox is among his finest works - the wary animal crystallized into a tense, glittering structure of planes. Marc would be killed at Verdun in 1916, his quest for an animal paradise cut tragically short.
