St. Francis Standing

1660 · Oil on Canvas
Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Boston
★ 6.3 editorial score

Saint Francis stands wrapped in a patched, hooded habit, his face half-lost in shadow, clutching a skull to his breast as he gazes upward in ecstatic contemplation. Francisco de Zurbaran sets the lone figure against deep darkness, the coarse brown wool sculpted by a single shaft of light - no landscape, no narrative, only the saint, his poverty, and his meditation on death. Now in Boston, it embodies the austere, mystical spirit of Spanish Counter-Reformation painting, devotion pared down to a body in rough cloth emerging from the dark.
