★ 5.2 editorial score
A bent, white-bearded old man shuffles forward leaning on two sticks, and beneath him Goya wrote the words 'Aun aprendo' - 'I am still learning.' Made in chalk in his last years, in failing health and self-imposed exile, the little drawing is widely taken as the aged artist's own defiant self-image. Now in the Prado, I Am Still Learning is among the most moving notes in his late work - a frail figure refusing to stop, the lifelong curiosity and stubborn vitality of one of art's greatest restless spirits distilled into a few chalk lines.
