At the end of time, Christ returns in glory to judge the living and the dead, sending the blessed to paradise and the damned to hell (Matthew 25:31-46). Fra Angelico sets Christ in a halo of light at the top, ranks of saints curving away on either side, and runs a corridor of opened graves down the center to divide the panel: at the left the saved are led, dancing, into a flowering garden; at the right demons drive the naked damned into fiery torment. The Dominican friar gives heaven his tenderest color, and saves his most grotesque, monstrous imagining for the demons and torments of hell.
