The Virgin and Child sit enthroned in a flowering garden, ringed by saints who share one continuous, perspectival space - an early and influential sacra conversazione, the 'sacred conversation' that replaced the walled-off compartments of the medieval polyptych with a single unified scene. Kneeling in front are Saints Cosmas and Damian, physician brothers and the name-saints of the Medici, whose patronage rebuilt the whole convent of San Marco. Fra Angelico orders the holy court with new Renaissance clarity while keeping his radiant color and devout calm. A small painted Crucifixion sits at the base, a reminder of the sacrifice underlying the serene gathering.
