Jealousy

1907 · Oil on Canvas
The Munch Museum, Oslo
★ 5.4 editorial score

A man's haunted, sallow-green face fills the foreground, his eyes glazed with inward torment, while behind him a woman in a flowing red robe plucks fruit beside another man, an Eden of temptation and betrayal. Munch makes Jealousy a study in psychological projection - the brooding foreground head consumed by what he imagines behind him. Now in the Munch Museum in Oslo, it belongs to his Frieze of Life, the great cycle on love and anguish - desire, suspicion, and the poison of envy rendered through distorted color and the obsessive workings of a tormented mind.
