The Last Supper (Ghirlandaio)

1480 · Fresco
Cenacolo di Ognissanti, Florence
★ 5.2 editorial score

Ghirlandaio sets the apostles along a single long table beneath a frescoed loggia open to orange trees, cypresses, and birds, with Judas placed apart on the near side - the traditional mark of the betrayer - and John drowsing against the cloth (John 13:21-30). Painted on the refectory wall of the Ognissanti convent in Florence, it folds the room's real architecture into the painted one, so the monks dined as though at the table's end. Decorative and serene where Bouts's Northern version in this collection is sacramental and grave, it fixed the type that Leonardo, a few years later, would break open in Milan.
