An Old Man and His Grandson

1490 · Tempera on Wood
Louvre, Paris
★ 7.3 editorial score

An old man whose nose is swollen and disfigured by disease looks down at a small boy, who gazes back up in complete trust, one hand laid on the man's chest; through the window a road winds toward blue hills. Ghirlandaio records the illness without flinching - a drawing of the same man, apparently taken after death, survives - yet the picture's true subject is tenderness across the generations, not affliction. The unsparing honesty and the warmth together make it one of the most humane portraits of the Renaissance. Red robe and quiet landscape frame a moment of pure, unguarded affection.
