Christ Crucified

1632 · Oil on Canvas
El Prado, Madrid
★ 7.3 editorial score

Christ hangs dead on the cross, alone against an empty black ground, his head fallen forward so that a curtain of dark hair half-veils the face, the body smooth, pale, and idealized. Velazquez strips the Crucifixion of crowd, landscape, and drama, leaving only the serene, solitary figure for private contemplation. The four nails, the calm symmetry, the quiet dignity make it an image of repose rather than agony. Now in the Prado, it is among the most restrained and moving of Spanish devotional paintings, suffering rendered as stillness.
