The Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in his Picture Gallery in Brussels

1647 · Oil on Copper
El Prado, Madrid
★ 5.9 editorial score

The Archduke Leopold Wilhelm stands in his Brussels gallery, its walls tiled top to bottom with dozens of paintings - identifiable Titians, Giorgiones, and Venetian masterpieces - while connoisseurs examine canvases stacked on the floor. David Teniers the Younger, who served as the archduke's curator, painted several of these 'gallery pictures' partly as a visual catalogue of the great collection. Now in the Prado, it is a painting about the love of paintings, a precise record of one of Europe's finest princely hoards and a celebration of collecting itself.
