The Magpie

1869 · Oil on Canvas
Musee d'Orsay, Paris
★ 7.3 editorial score

A single magpie perches on a wattle gate in a vast field of fresh snow, the long shadows tinged with blue and violet, the whole scene hushed and luminous under a pale winter sky. Monet renders the snow not as flat white but as a shimmer of delicate colored light, an astonishing feat of observation. Now in the Musee d'Orsay, the Magpie is among the greatest of all snow paintings - rejected by the Salon in its day, now beloved for its quiet poetry and its tender, exacting study of how light truly falls on a wintry world.
