The Sacrifice of Isaac

1603 · Oil on Canvas
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
★ 6.3 editorial score

An angel grabs Abraham's wrist at the last second, halting the knife at the throat of Isaac, who twists and cries out beneath his father's heavy hand while a ram appears at the right (Genesis 22). Caravaggio packs the test of faith into a tight, brightly lit foreground, the old man's startled face turning toward the messenger, the boy's open mouth all terror. There is no ceremony, only the raw physical struggle of the moment. Now in the Uffizi, it shows his gift for catching a sacred story at its most violent hinge.
