Ecce Homo (Caravaggio)
Pilate presents the scourged Christ to the crowd - 'Behold the man' (John 19:5) - drawing back a hand toward the bound, thorn-crowned prisoner as a tormentor looms behind. Caravaggio compresses the three figures into a shallow, dark space lit by a single hard light, the silent suffering of Christ set against Pilate's worldly gesture and the brute's leer. Now in the Palazzo Rosso in Genoa, it strips the scene to its psychological core, forcing the viewer into the place of the jeering mob who must decide what to do with the man before them.
