Kindred Spirits

1838 · Oil on Canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
★ 6.8 editorial score

Two friends - the painter Thomas Cole and the poet William Cullen Bryant - stand together on a rocky ledge above a wooded gorge in the Catskills, surveying the wild American scenery they both loved. Asher B. Durand painted it as a tribute after Cole's early death, naming it for the bond between landscape art and poetry. A cornerstone of the Hudson River School, Kindred Spirits celebrates the spiritual communion between nature, painting, and verse - the wilderness framed as a sacred place where art and friendship meet, and a memorial to a lost master.
