Ecce Homo (Ciseri)

1871 · Oil on Canvas
Location unknown
★ 4.2 editorial score

From a balcony above an unseen crowd, Pilate presents the scourged Christ to the mob - 'Ecce homo,' behold the man - the figures seen largely from behind so that the viewer shares their vantage, looking out toward the judgment below. Antonio Ciseri, a Swiss-Italian academic painter, stages the scene with theatrical precision, rich fabrics, and crisp detail. The unusual rear viewpoint draws us into the event, making us witnesses among the officials. The picture is among the most admired religious works of the later nineteenth century, its polished realism lending fresh drama to an ancient subject.
